Sanitizing Footwear

There are many reasons why someone would need to sanitize or disinfect their shoes. You may have just purchased a beautiful pair of used shoes or your own shows have become soiled for some reason.
During the pandemic, maybe you are an essential worker or are just afraid that when you go out, your shoes are carrying viruses such as Covid-19 and more.
Whatever the reason may be, disinfecting your shoes may be necessary at some point and it is always beneficial to know how to properly sanitize your footwear for your peace of mind.

What to use to sanitize your shoes?

Many people ask what to use to clean, sanitize, and disinfect shoes. There are a variety of things that can be used including: laundry detergent, baking soda, vinegar, and disinfecting sprays. Sunlight and heat are also other methods that have been used to sanitize. The product or method used will depend on the type of shoe, the extent of sanitization and the amount of time you have.
Simple detergent for example, can help clean your shoes, but if you want to sanitize the shoes, it is advised to take a second step after cleaning them with soap to sanitize them. This can be done with baking soda or any other approved method for disinfecting.
If you have time, some shoes, insoles or shoelaces can be soaked in baking soda, lemon juice or even left out in the hot sun.
Apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and disinfectant sprays are also popular products to help sanitize shoes. After you find the product of your choice, you may need to determine how you are now going to sanitize. You may sanitize by washing machine or by hand. If doing by hand, you can use various tools such as cleaning cloths, brushes and more.

What part of the shoe should you sanitize?

When sanitizing your shoes, you must assure that you disinfect all parts of your shoes. This is essential because dirt, germs and viruses may linger on parts and crevices of shoes. There are therefore 3 important parts of a shoe that should be factored in when sanitizing. These include: the actual shoe, the insole of the shoe and the laces.
You can both machine wash or hand wash your shoe. The method that you choose will depend on several things including the material the shoes is made of and the effort and time you are willing to put in.
When disinfecting the insoles of your shoes you must take special care, especially if you are sanitizing used shoes. Because this is the area that the actual foot will be in, it is essential that you take proper precautions to ensure sanitization. This part should probably be done by hand.
In regards to shoelaces, these can be done both by hand as well or by washing machine. If you choose to use a washing machine, place the shoelaces in a shoe bag or other cloth bag and wash as per machine instructions. If washing by hand, soaking them first is encouraged.
In between sanitizing your shoes, there are several products on the market that are now explicitly there to sanitize shoes before you enter homes and establishments. If you are looking for any such product, Cleanora is here to help. Contact us today for more information.

Aris was on time - actually early - and did an extremely thorough job cleaning. When I forgot to tell him we had a dog which contributed to fur on the carpet, he was so accommodating. He was friendly and professional and prompt in his responses when coordinating the service. I will happily reach out to him again to use his services in the future.
